If You Want to Walk on Water

Have just read a book for the second time, since there were lots of little items in it that needed re-visiting. The Author is John Ortberg, a US pastor and author. The title is “If You Want To Walk On Water, You Have To Get Out Of The Boat”. It is a spiritual book but with a difference. None of the heavy duty dissertations you find so much, instead it treats the walk of Peter in a very humorous manner. It could equally well be called “Walking on Water For Dummies”. As expected, the book is about the disciples sitting in a boat on a stormy night when Jezus ambles by on the water and invites them to stroll along. Only one takes him up on it. And from that point on, the reader is presented with several, sometimes intriguing, stories that show examples of what the writer means. Very well done. There are some sentences in it that are so true, for example “Every word you speak boosts someone’s hope a bit, or kills it just a little.” It is a bit removed from EFT since belief has nothing to do with EFT working or not, it works irrespective if you believe it or not. But the book gave me some interesting ideas for working further with EFT. I will copy a small excerpt further down so you can see if it would be to your liking. A Single Step

At the climax of the movie Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Indiana has to pass three supreme tests to reach the Holy Grail and save his father, who is dying.
The first test is “The Breath of God.” As he walks down a corridor, Indiana must bow down at precisely the right moment to keep from having his head cut off by large, revolving metal blades.
The second test is “The Word of God.” Jones must walk on just the right stones-the ones that spell God’s name in Latin- to keep from falling through the floor to his death.

But the third test, “The Path of God,” is the most difficult. Indiana comes to the edge of a large chasm - about a hundred feet across and a thousand feet down. On the other side of the chasm is the doorway to the Holy Grail. The instructions say, “Only in the leap from the lion’s head, will he prove his worth.”

Indiana says to himself, “It’s impossible. Nobody can jump this.” Then he realizes that this test requires a leap of faith. His father says,”You must believe, boy. You must believe!” Even though every nerve and fiber of his being screams that he must not do it, Indiana walks to the end of the cliff… lifts his foot … and then steps out into thin air - hoping that somehow he won’t end up like Wile E.Coyote in the “Roadrunner ” Cartoons.

If you have seen the movie, you know what happens next. Indiana does not plummet to his death, but is upheld by an invisible force.

“Without faith it is impossible to please God,” the writer of Hebrews says. How much faith is required? Good news– not perfect certainty. Indiana Jones can have doubts- he can have a whole cavern full of them. How little confidence he feels does not count against him. And that is a good thing, because if the beads of sweat on his forehead are any indication, he is not a pillar of certainty.

He needs only enough faith to take a step. He needs only enough faith to put his life on the line. Fot the most part, it is a matter of the will. If he is willing to act as if a bridge will be there, the bridge will be there. But he has to take the step first. If he does not take the step , he will never know.
